On this day in America, we celebrate the poetic artform of the traditional Japanese haiku. Three lines of poetry, usually unrhymed, with a structure in syllables per line of 5 – 7 – 5. Students in Ms. Frese’s English and journalism classes enjoyed the modified schedule today to take some time to write and share their original works of haiku. And here they are…
Colors are peaceful
They swirl and mix together
Creating wonder
~ CRW
Late Night, phone still glows
Scrolling past the hours lost
Sleep feels far away
~Isabella Pena~
Today is Friday
There’s a wind advisory
Be in the moment
~ J.T. ~
I LOVE MY FUGLY CAT
EVEN IF SHE IS SMELLY
I STILL LOVE HER
~ anonymous
Mist over the hills
Old worlds carried in the wind
Earth remembers allĀ ~ Gerardo Villalobos
I love my girlfriend
She’s so beautiful and nice
I love her so much
~ Angel P.
These two poems, though not quite meeting the haiku structure standards of 5-7-5, are still worth reading as they maintain the expression of the artists in observation of the world around them:
Colors are violent
They twirl and fight
’til only one’s left ~ J.R.
Summers Sun is Sunny
Leaving yesterday’s pollen to burn away
And when we wake up it is winter ~ Vishnu
