Last week Gilbert High School celebrated making healthy choices by hosting Red Ribbon Week activities Oct 27 through Oct 31st. FNL club decorated campus by placing red ribbons everywhere, on classroom doors, and campus trees. They planned fun events everyday in which students and staff played games, participated in contests, and had a great time just being together.
FNL gave out treats to people that wore their red ribbon bracelet, and to anyone who participated in this spirit week by dressing up.
On Monday, there was a pajama day. The activity planned out was a donut eating contest. Students and staff had to eat a donut without using their hands, as fast as possible, and whoever finished first won a ticket. The ticket allowed them to have one free pie to throw at their favorite teachers.
Tuesday was twin or jersey day. The activity was to tie a balloon on your ankle and try to pop other’s balloons with your foot without endangering your balloon. The reference was to stomp out drugs, as each balloon was labeled with a dangerous chemical.
Ms. Cam and the Gil Lab also hosted a pumpkin painting activity throughout the day. They set up outside room 40 by the lunch tables. Everyone was welcome to come paint a pumpkin.
Wednesday was camo day and teams of four were challenged to compete in mini battles like an obstacle course for people to race through. Our attendance has been down this year, so some of the regular club teams were no-shows. Despite the lack of numbers, this was a fun day of lunchtime collaboration.
On Thursday, Gladiators enjoyed the annual Pie-throwing contest. The theme of the day was rock and roll in which everyone was invited to where their favorite band shirt. The pie contest was fun until it was abruptly interrupted by a neighborhood event that placed our school on a level 3 lockdown! Everyone had to scramble to the nearest classroom. Some staff were covered with pie and pudding. It was a mess. Thankfully, no one was injured, and everyone on our campus was safe.
Friday, October 31st, was Halloween. Ms. Alcala and staff and students prepared a Day of the Dead festival. There were ofrendas, food, a photo booth, music, costumes, and a drum circle was also led by the music appreciation club.
Red Ribbon Week 2025 was filled with wacky and weird moments, for sure, but despite all the craziness, everyone learned about the benefits of sober living, had fun and stayed safe.
