The Many Clubs of Gilbert High School are Open for Business

Joanna Ruiz, Staff Writer

The many and varied clubs that were represented in the quad last month included FNL/ASB/GSA/H&S/JOURNALISM/R.O.P./Counseling Services/Gardening/Guitar Club and more. Take a moment to get to know a little bit about each of our club advisors, the history and future plans of each exciting club on campus:

H&S/Journalism (Ms.Frese)

Gilbert High School H&S is a poetry club. The abbreviation stands for Hearts and Souls. Also journalism is a club and you mostly do storytelling and publishing for that club. During Aug. 30th – Sep.3rd there was a club rush. There were many people out in the quad signing up for this club. There were about 11 students who signed up for both these clubs. Meetings are usually on Thursdays at lunch in room 12 some of the things they do in this club are “celebrate writers, create school wide events that include poetry slams writing showcases, and we write for both the news and the school writing publications” that is what Ms.Frese said. The reason why you should join is because it’s a way for people to have fun with writing or have comments with publications. If they really enjoy it, it’s an amazing club with an amazing teacher so if you would like to join, go to the meeting on Thursday at lunch in room 12 and show up with an open and creative mind, says ms.frese. This club has a couple benefits in our future some of them being improving writing skills and speaking skills. Some of the activities students will be doing in this club are Poetry slam, talent show, and publishing. On September 2 they went to The Pageant of the Masters and here is a little message from Ms.Frese

“We are also seeking a POET LAUREATE for the 2021-2022 school year. Would you like to represent your school with your amazing poetry? Join us in room 12 at lunch on Thursdays!”

GSA (Ms.Maessen)

Another one of our clubs is named Rainbow Gladiators. This club was also in the quad from Aug.30th-Sep.3rd and they got 8 people who joined the Rainbow Gladiators. This club is about supporting our LGBTQIA+ peers and straight ally youth and making them feel safe. Another thing they do in this club is discuss sexual orientation, gender identity issues and work to create a school environment without discrimination/harassment/intolerance. Why should we join this club? You ask if you join it its to support the people around us who are in this club and to get support also make them and you feel like they are in a safe zone when joining. The only things you need to do to join is have interest, empathy and to show kindness at all times. They meet in room 40 during 4th period everyday. Will it benefit us in the future? Ms.Maessen had said yes because it will help us be aware and help us support each other and the people around us who are in LGBTQ. The reason she made this club was because she saw that they needed a supportive/safe environment for the students who are in LGBTQ also she has been eight years strong with this club at Gilbert High School. They have many events/activities and field trips in this club. You should join this club It has an amazing and supportive teacher so if you are interested join now.
