First Poet Laureate Visits Gilbert High School

Melissa Moreno, Staff Writer

Hey Gladiators, The Hearts and Souls Journalism Club is pleased to announce the 2019-2020 campaign for the Gilbert High School Poet Laureate.

If you’re a poet and you know it, or you have a story to tell, please attend next week’s lunchtime kickoff

Election Interviews and a poetry slam will be held on Tuesday, September 10th at lunch in room 12. Bring your lunch. We will have snacks and a microphone for you.

If you think you got the words to carry the hearts and souls of our Gilbert story across campus, throughout the District, and into our community… we need you to join the club and represent! You are also welcomed to attend and watch the fun.

Could the next Poet Laureate be YOU?

Meet Kaitlen “Keke Gibson” Peterson: Kaitlen Peterson was the first ever Poet Laureate here at Gilbert High School. She was here last week to talk about her experience of being the first Poet Laureate and how she spoke at graduation. Here’s her very first poem as Poet Laureate the theme of her poem is the emotions we go through in the first week at a new school.

“The feeling”

A new school year, brand new people

Have no friends, all alone

That’s how it started

The feeling, feeling of terror and loneliness disappeared

This aint that bad,

Everyone is so nice

The feeling, feeling of calmness and ease

I love it here

Its my second home

The feeling, feeling of love and family

I wouldn’t change anything

The feeling?

It’s the best
