It’s a new year with more issues to tackle, but the social justice association has not met yet. Each Tuesday in room 12. Students are invited to attend a public meeting to generate awareness for the causes, problems, or issues that are important to the school and greater community.
Due to schedule changes and attendance, Social Justice Association, also known as “SoJA” has lost a few members, but still promises to keep up the good fight for social justice.
Last year the SoJA club members launched a peace movement to create a mural on campus and a petition to free indigenous inmate, Leonard Peltier. They hosted signings, and wrote letters to the president asking for clemency for Peltier.
Peltier is up for parole in July of 2024. It will be interesting to see if President Biden signs the clemency papers.
Our campus is actively looking at other issues, like the bus route and hunger issues in our community. Members of OCAPICA visited classrooms today to seek student opinions about improving their school community. Students discussed topics like help with job search, mental health. Students in room 12 unanimously favored Gilbert over their home school overall.
If discussions like these might interest you, come to a SoJA meeting. Tuesdays at lunch in room 12 is the place to discuss the issues that need attention. Hopefully, the SoJA club will start to pick up the pace in the new year.
