The Music Club first became an elective class in 2023. There were no materials to start with so staff and students asked for a little help from family and friends in the industry. Then, some school funds were allotted to purchase percussion gear, before Prop 28 funds were earmarked for VAPA programs in public schools.
More equipment was ordered from approved vendors, but the class needed more to develop their music class and to prepare for the creation of a campus music studio. Word spread that the kids needed a little help to keep the drum beating.
Then, an amazing cadre of local musicians, mainly friends of Ms. Frese and Mr. Michel, helped by donating gear. A member of a popular local surf band donated two pro model base guitars. Another local hero donated a beautiful Yamaha acoustic guitar and a Peavey amp. An anonymous donor picked up the tab for ten new ukuleles, a vintage drum kit, and a subscription for recording software. A professional rock and roll drummer donated cymbal hardware, drum sticks, and drum heads. A neighbor of one of Mr. Michel donated an electric piano! A nearby community member reached out via email to arrange for the delivery an upright piano.
People have taken notice that Gilbert High School students love music and need the support and the space that will leverage new opportunities for them to learn, go, expand their creativity, and actually be able to see their dreams come true. The can collaborate, play, and even record their musical ideas.
Word is out in the music industry and the greater community that Gilbert kids love music and want to build their dream school of rock right here on campus. Check out Club 33 1/3 and pop into room 12 for more updates about Music Club and all that is going on to drive student voice and choice.
