Every year Anaheim Union High School District schools participate in the writing and performing of Soapbox speeches. At Gilbert High School this event is called: Gilbert Talks.
Gilbert Talks this year was on February 27th, 2025.
The event was incredibly successful with multiple classes sitting as audience members and others watching through a Livestream provided by April Buker, a coordinator of this year’s Gilbert Talks.
One of the performers, Linda Escobar, delivered a speech about Literacy Crisis in California. She discussed the importance of all children learning to read and write and how these foundational skills help them be successful.
Linda said, “I wasn’t really scared to go in front of everyone and talk because it wasn’t my first time.” But what did make her a little nervous was that she missed all of the opportunities to go talk to the teachers that help you on your speech, but she still pulled through, even with it being her first year at Gilbert High School.
Linda was the first place winner for Gilbert Talks and will be going to speak at the District competition, AUHSD Talks on March 13th.
She is nervous but excited!
