I recently learned about our vocal coach and arts assistant, Karen Los. Here is a snapshot of her life, in her own words:
JC: Hi, I’m Joseph and I have a few questions. First, can you tell me your name?
KL: Karen Lo
JC: What do you do here as an Arts Assistant?
KL: I teach a music program which includes vocals, piano, music theory, music philosophy, stage presence, breathing techniques, etc…
JC: I understand you are a professional singer/songwriter. Can you tell me more about that aspect of your life?
KL: I started singing and performing at the age of 12. I have been in numerous singing competitions, and won a few of them. I have worked with multiple music producers, and collaborated with Tia and Tamera Mowry, who were on the tv show Sister Sisters. In 2007 I appeared on America’s Got Talent Show in season 2. I am a former recording artist with Sony Music Distribution, and that lasted from 2017-2023.
JC: What are your favorite things to do in your free time?
KL: Singing, dancing, working out, watch basketball. Eating healthy foods, exploring fun things to do.
JC: Do you have any siblings?
KL: Yes, I have two older brothers.
JC: Where are you from?
KL: I was born in Hong Kong.
JC: What are some of your skills ?
KL: Teaching, being able to speak three different languages like English , Cantonese, Mandarin. I can translate for others. Cooking, etc…
JC: What are some of your goals as an Arts Assistant?
KL: To able to make a long lasting career out of it. Being able to help other in every way I can with their needs. Expanding my knowledge and understanding on how to help students who have disabilities, etc…
JC: Why did you choose to work here?
KL: I enjoying teaching, I like to help others learn and it’s an enjoyment for me to be able to help others who want to learn.
JC: What do you think your role here means?
KL: I believe my role here is: to teach, to help, and to learn.
Ms. Karen Lo works with the Music Appreciation students during period 5 in room 12 with Ms. Frese this quarter, 2 to 3 days per week.
