At Gilbert High School ASB hosted the Annual Great American Smoke Out (GASO) spirit week. There was plenty to do, with a lot of activities. Students got to participate from November 18 through November 22nd. We witnessed a house dunk contest where students and staff got to play on the basketball court and dunk small basketballs into lowered hoops.
Athletic contestants which included staff and students included Ben Taylor, Lucio Popoca, Derik Perez, and Mr. Nakayama, and others. Each entrant had two chances to dunk a ball. If they nailed it on their first try, that was it! They were judged based on style, effort, and, of course, dunking.
There was a judges’ panel. These were three teachers, Ms. OG, Mr. Oquendo and Ms. Frese, that judged each slam dunk. The winner of the competition, edging out Lucio Popoca, was the amazing Derik Perez with his stylish spin and slam. 10. 10. 10!
Other activities included house Jeopardy, an eating contest, and anti-Tobacco-themed poster contest. These activities were specifically made to encourage students to not smoke and that there is plenty of fun things you can do that don’t include smoking.
