Gilbert High School kicked off its basketball season with an impressive performance that showcased teamwork and strong defense. Leading the charge was Game 1’s MVP, Derik Perez, who scored a GHS single-game record 26 points and pulled down 13 rebounds, making him the clear offensive standout. Perez’s dominant play in the paint kept the team competitive, giving them the upper hand in key moments.
Lucio Popoca added to the effort with an efficient 8 points, including a clutch 3-pointer in the 4th quarter, complemented by his hustle on defense, where he made an impressive 7 steals (just 1 shy of the GHS single-game record). Joshua Ramirez also contributed significantly with 4 points but stood out on the boards, grabbing 18 rebounds and adding 2 blocks (both GHS single-game records). His presence was felt on both ends, controlling the glass and stopping second-chance opportunities.
Manuel Beltran and Deondre Flynn each contributed 2 points and 1 rebound apiece, with Beltran adding 6 steals to the defensive effort. Edwen Mariano added a steal to his stat line as well.
In Gilbert High’s first game, the team demonstrated a solid start, with standout performances across the lineup. With Perez’s scoring, Popoca’s clutch play, and Ramirez’s defensive presence, the team seems to be building a foundation for a promising season.
