Mrs.Buker’s 9/11 Commemoration

Gabriel Alvarez, staff writer

September 11, 2001, a day marked in American history as a tragic day. Nearly 3,000 American lives were lost. Although this was 18 years ago, I have heard stories from people that were alive at the time and they tell the stories with such remembrance and gloom like they were in New York themselves. After the attack, the nation had to reinvent their idea of security, not only nationally, but locally. That day left a battle scar for the nation and its people.

Mrs.Beuker’s Civic engagement class wanted to commemorate 9/11 with an activity. There is an installation in New York, an art piece in the 9/11 museum from Spencer Finch, named  “Trying to Remember the Color of the Sky on That September Morning”, and they put a thought-provoking spin on it. They went class to class passing out blue post-it notes, asking students to engage in they activity. They asked three questions: “What do they know, what do they think, and what they wonder about 9/11?”

Mrs. Bueker said she was pleased with the resposnes. It was a school-wide activity. She said that over 200 responses were collected. “Students really put thought into their responses. The quotes were really thoughtful.”
